How Vibe analyzers were used

A Vibe QM3 Rice Analyzer measured the length and width of broken-rice kernels across cultivars, forms, and moisture contents, supporting a study of how those factors affect the angle of repose used in bulk grain storage and handling design.

Study overview

The angle of repose (AoR) of rice affects the design of bins, chutes, and other bulk-handling equipment. This study measured piling and emptying AoR across long-grain rice cultivars, forms (rough, brown, milled), and moisture contents from 12-21%, with the length and width of broken-rice kernels measured using a Vibe QM3 Rice Analyzer. Piling AoR was consistently lower than emptying AoR, hybrid cultivars showed greater AoR than purelines (attributed to hull characteristics), AoR increased with moisture content, and brown rice showed the lowest AoR among the forms tested, while head and broken milled rice showed similar AoR to rough rice.
