How Vibe analyzers were used

A Vibe QM3 Rice Analyzer measured kernel length, width, length-width ratio, and color on brown rice across 126 rice genotypes, supporting a rapid volatile-compound and sensory screening method for distinct rice aroma profiles.

Study overview

Aroma is a key driver of rice quality and market value, but evaluating it in breeding programs is typically labor-intensive and constrained by limited seed availability. This study developed a rapid sensory phenotyping method for unmilled paddy rice using a small ground-grain sample combined with chemical analysis of volatile compounds. Whole-kernel grain characteristics, including kernel length, width, length-to-width ratio, and color, were measured on brown rice using a Vibe QM3 Rice Analyzer. Testing 126 rice genotypes revealed five distinct aroma profiles (popcorn-dominant, fruity-floral, nutty-grainy, woody-floral, and oxidation-driven), showing that superior rice aroma is a multivariate trait rather than the product of a single marker compound, and offering breeding programs an efficient combined grain-and-aroma screening tool.
