How Vibe analyzers were used

Grain dimensions (length and breadth) of drought-, bacterial-leaf-blight-, and blast-resistant rice introgression lines were measured with a Vibe QM3 image analyzer to confirm grain quality was preserved alongside the introgressed resistance and drought-tolerance traits.

Study overview

Drought, bacterial leaf blight (BLB), and blast are key stresses that significantly affect rice grain yield. This study used marker-assisted forward breeding with a simultaneous crossing approach to combine three drought-tolerance QTL (qDTY1.1, qDTY3.1, qDTY12.1), four BLB resistance genes (Xa4, xa5, xa13, Xa21), and one blast-resistance gene (Pi9) into the elite rice cultivar Lalat. Grain dimensions (kernel length and breadth) of selected introgression lines were measured using a Vibe QM3 image analyzer to confirm that grain quality traits were preserved. Under reproductive-stage drought stress, introgression lines with major-effect QTL showed yield advantages over the elite parent Lalat, while also carrying improved resistance to BLB and blast.
