How Vibe analyzers were used

A Vibe QM3i grain analyzer measured filled-spikelet length and width across a 396-line recombinant inbred population from a cross between weedy red rice and a cultivated breeding line, supporting a high-resolution linkage map and germplasm resource for studying weedy-rice trait genetics.

Study overview

This registration describes 396 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) developed from a cross between weedy red rice and a cultivated rice breeding line, advanced through the F12 generation. The lines were evaluated for wild-like traits (seed dormancy, pigmentation, and appendages) and crop-mimic traits, including filled-spikelet length and width measured with a Vibe QM3i grain analyzer. A subset of 250 lines was genotyped with 7,098 SNP markers, producing a high-resolution linkage map (1,259 cM) spanning all 12 chromosomes, with 20.2% parental polymorphism and 96.9% mean RIL purity. The population identifies recombination hot and cold spots useful for QTL mapping and for studying the evolutionary genetics of weedy rice, and materials are held at the USDA-ARS Dale Bumpers National Rice Research Center.
