How Vibe analyzers were used
Kernel length, width, and area were recorded with a Vibe QM3 grain analyzer across 297 U.S. hard winter wheat accessions, feeding a genome-wide association study that identified 53 marker-trait associations for spike and kernel traits.
Study overview
Understanding the genetic control of spike and kernel traits supports development of higher-yielding wheat varieties. This study evaluated a panel of 297 hard winter wheat accessions from the U.S. Great Plains across three environments for eight spike- and kernel-related traits, including kernel length, width, and area, which were recorded using an automated Vibe QM3 grain analyzer. Analysis of 15,590 genetic markers identified 53 marker-trait associations across seven traits, with the most for spike length (16), followed by spikelets per spike (15) and spikelet density (11). Fourteen associations represented stable QTL across multiple environments, and five multi-trait associations were identified that could support trait pyramiding in breeding programs.
